The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government maps out government plans for revitalising the UK high streets so that they can ‘once again become the proud and prosperous heart of every community’
Our high streets have been in decline over the past 20 years, however for many of us these past 2 years (since Covid) has meant that we have stayed close to our communities and shopped local, and we have rediscovered our high streets.
The government plan is to enable greater flexibility and freedom for high streets and town centres to adapt to the requirements of the surrounding communities, supported by £10 billion of funding which will target urban regeneration.
Their vision focusses on five key priorities:-
- Breathing new life into empty buildings
- Supporting high street businesses
- Improving public realm
- Creating safe and clean spaces
- Celebrating pride in local communities
These priorities will be underpinned by a series of new and existing ambitious measures to help high streets become clean, green, mixed-use spaces in which people not only want to shop but also live, work and relax.
